PTFE PRECISION MACHINING OF CUSTOM PLASTIC COMPONENTS

Table of Contents

Rifertech PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is a performance thermoplastic renowned for its numerous exceptional properties. These include:

  • Chemical inertness and resistance to attack
  • Low coefficient of friction
  • Broad operating temperature range (-400° F to 500° F or -260° C to 260° C)
  • Excellent dielectric properties
  • Thermal and electrical insulating capabilities
  • Negligible water absorption
  • Non-stick characteristic

PTFE resins are among the most widely used fluoroplastic materials. Although its mechanical properties are relatively low compared to other advanced engineering plastics, its properties remain useful over a wide temperature range, making it suitable for many applications. PTFE can even be used at temperatures as low as -436° F (-260° C).

To enhance its properties, PTFE can be compounded with various fillers, such as a 15% or 25% glass-filled PTFE. This improves wear resistance, part stability, creep strength, and reduces deformation under load compared to virgin grade PTFE. The addition of glass filler has minimal impact on the electrical properties of PTFE, making it suitable for electrical insulators.

PTFE GASKETS

Gaskets are an integral component of any device that requires the confinement of a gas or liquid. They come in all shapes and sizes and compensate for the unconformity of mating surfaces, whether minute or large, depending on the device’s purpose. Gaskets differ from seals; gaskets are normally cut from sheets or rolls, while seals are formed individually in their own configuration. A flat-cut gasket is derived from material of a specific thickness and configuration designed for a specific application.

PTFE gaskets come in various types based on their structure and purpose:

  1. Pure PTFE Gaskets: Made from pure PTFE material, exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance and sealing performance.
  2. Modified PTFE Gaskets: Enhanced by adding fillers or reinforcing materials to improve compression strength, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity.
  3. Expanded PTFE Gaskets: Made from expanded PTFE without any binders or additives, possessing strong chemical resistance and creep cold flow resistance.
  4. Spiral Wound PTFE Gaskets: Made by spirally winding V-shaped or W-shaped thin steel strips with PTFE filler, featuring a semi-metallic structure suitable for sealing various media.

Expanded PTFE (EPTFE) gasket material is a soft and conformable material ideal for applications with limited bolt load torque or where excessive bolt load will cause more problems than it will solve, such as glass-lined pipe. This exceptional sealing material has the same chemical resistance and temperature range as any PTFE but is softer and will effect a seal much quicker than regular PTFE gasket material.

PTFE Unique material characteristics:

  1. Extremely Low Friction Coefficient: PTFE has the lowest friction coefficient among solid materials, reducing friction and wear in sealing applications.
  2. Minimal Surface Tension: PTFE possesses the smallest surface tension among solid materials, making it difficult for substances to adhere, which helps maintain the cleanliness and sealing performance of the sealing surface.
  3. Excellent Corrosion Resistance: PTFE demonstrates strong chemical stability, resistant to all chemical corrosive substances except molten sodium and liquid fluorine, including boiling in aqua regia without change. This makes PTFE gaskets widely used in corrosive media in the chemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, and other industries.
  4. Good Flexibility, Compressive Resilience, and Creep Resistance: PTFE gaskets possess good flexibility and compressive resilience, adapting to different shapes and sizes of flange sealing surfaces. Additionally, their creep resistance ensures good sealing performance under long-term stress.
  5. High and Low Temperature Resistance: PTFE gaskets maintain stable performance within a wide temperature range, typically from -190°C to 250°C.
  6. Non-aging and Self-lubricating: PTFE gaskets also exhibit non-aging and self-lubricating properties, maintaining stable sealing performance and reducing friction and wear over time.
