I. Core Characteristics
- Exceptional Flame Retardancy
- High – Grade Flame Retardant Performance: Flame retardant rubbers can meet UL94 V – 0, V – 1 standards or conform to GB/T 2408 requirements by incorporating various flame retardants such as halogen – based, phosphorus – based, and metal hydroxide compounds. This enables them to self – extinguish or significantly delay combustion once removed from the flame source.
- Low – Smoke Emission: Halogen – free formulations, like those containing aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide, generate less toxic smoke during combustion. This not only improves safety but also ensures compliance with strict environmental regulations such as EU RoHS and REACH.
- Superior Thermal Stability: These rubbers maintain their flame – retardant properties even at high temperatures. For instance, silicone rubber can withstand temperatures ranging from 200 – 300°C, while fluororubber can operate in the 200 – 300°C range. They are highly resistant to thermal decomposition, reducing the risk of ignition under extreme heat conditions.
- Outstanding Physical and Mechanical Properties
- Elasticity and Flexibility Retention: Flame retardant rubbers retain the inherent elasticity of regular rubbers, making them suitable for applications that require dynamic sealing or cushioning. Examples include automotive seals and shock pads, where their flexibility ensures a proper fit and long – term performance.
- Enhanced Strength and Durability: Through the addition of fillers such as carbon black and silica, along with optimized vulcanization systems, these rubbers exhibit increased tensile strength, improved tear resistance, and enhanced abrasion resistance. This makes them durable for use in demanding industrial applications.
- Robust Environmental and Chemical Resistance
- Chemical Resistance: Fluororubber and neoprene – based flame retardant rubbers are highly resistant to oils, acids, alkalis, and a wide range of solvents. This property makes them ideal for use in corrosive environments, such as those found in chemical plants and the petroleum industry.
- Aging Resistance: Silicone rubber and chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber (CSM) demonstrate excellent resistance to ozone and UV aging. This characteristic allows them to be used in long – term outdoor applications, like building seal strips, without significant degradation over time.
- Flexible Processing Adaptability
- Moldability: Flame Retarded rubbers can be shaped into various forms through vulcanization processes, which can be either thermal or room – temperature vulcanization. They can be transformed into sheets, tubes, O – rings, films, and other shapes, meeting the diverse needs of different industries.
- Tunable Composite Properties: Their formulations can be adjusted to balance flame retardancy with other important properties. For example, they can be designed to have good low – temperature resistance or conductivity, catering to specific application requirements.

Flame retardant rubber matting Applications
- Industrial and Mechanical Manufacturing
- Sealing and Protection: Flame retardant gaskets and O – rings are used in high – temperature equipment such as boilers and reactors, as well as in flammable environments like gas pipelines. Their role is crucial in preventing leakage, which could otherwise lead to fires.
- Conveyor Belts and Hoses: In coal mines and chemical plants, flame retardant conveyor belts are used. These belts are not only resistant to oil and wear but also prevent the spread of fire. Similarly, hydraulic system hoses made of flame retardant rubber reduce the risk of fire caused by oil leaks.
- Cable Insulation: Flame retardant rubber is used to sheath power and communication cables. This helps prevent the spread of fire along the cable network, especially in applications like low – smoke halogen – free cables, which are widely used in buildings and public facilities.
- Automotive and Transportation
- Interior and Components: Flame retardant padding for dashboards and seats, as well as door seals that comply with FMVSS 302, are used in vehicles. In the engine compartment, fluororubber oil seals are employed. These seals are resistant to oil, heat, and fire, ensuring the safe operation of the engine.
- Tires and Accessories: For special vehicles such as fire trucks and construction vehicles, flame retardant tread rubber is used. This reduces the risk of ignition due to friction during operation.
- Construction and Building Materials
- Fireproof Sealing Materials: Flame retardant strips are used in building curtain walls and fire – resistant door seals to effectively block the spread of fire and smoke. In fire engineering, cable wall penetration firestop materials made of flame retardant rubber are essential for preventing fire from spreading through cable openings.
- Waterproofing and Coatings: Flame retardant rubber coatings are applied to roofs and basements. These coatings combine waterproof and fireproof functions, providing comprehensive protection. In tunnels, wall linings made of flame retardant rubber enhance fire safety.
- Electronics and Home Appliances
- Electronic Equipment Protection: Flame retardant rubber casings and key seals, such as those used in silicone keyboards, meet UL94 standards. Flame retardant cushioning materials are also used in battery packs to prevent short – circuit fires, ensuring the safety of electronic devices.
- Appliance Components: Flame retardant hoses are used in washing machines and ovens, and microwave door seals made of flame retardant rubber ensure the safe operation of these home appliances.
- Aerospace and Defense
- Aircraft Components: In aircraft engines, flame retardant seals made of fluororubber and fuel system hoses are used. These components can withstand extreme temperatures and fuel corrosion. Military – grade flame retardant rubber covers are used in harsh environments to protect sensitive equipment.
- Marine and Offshore Engineering: In ship cabins, flame retardant rubber flooring and pipeline seals are used. These components comply with IMO FTPC standards, effectively preventing the spread of marine fires.
- Specialized Fields
- Mining and Tunnels: In coal mines, flame retardant conveyor belts and gas pipeline seals are used to reduce the risk of methane explosions. In tunnel ventilation systems, flame retardant shock absorbers are installed to enhance safety.
